Amagansett House

We've been lucky to count the owners of this Amagansett house as longstanding clients. The property has been in the family for years and was a summer getaway for their now-adult children. The owners, now grandparents, came to us wanting to extend the home to accommodate their growing family. Our design goals included restructuring the interior flow of the home while improving the relationship to the rear yard and pool.

A two-story addition houses the owners’ suite, which feels separate from the entertainment spaces but is part of the main structure.

We achieved this via an open, modern staircase and glass-filled atrium connecting both areas of the home. Collaborating with the owners, a great contracting team led by Beni Shoshi of Shoshi Builders, and Sterling Lawn & Tree Service ensured that the project was a success.

We restored the existing home and took care that the new addition respected the existing architecture while increasing the indoor-outdoor connection via improved flow and large windows.

The house sits behind a meandering driveway in the Lanes, creating a sense of seclusion and strong connection to nature.

The landscape team created an incredible outdoor environment. Our collaboration with them allowed the property to become an oasis surrounded by mature trees and a beautifully maintained yard. From nearly every living space, glimpses of the outdoors create a sense of connection to nature.

The original kitchen was small, tucked away, and not well suited for large gatherings. As the family grew and welcomed grandchildren, that limitation became a friction point. A larger kitchen was necessary to accommodate their daily life and holiday celebrations.

We collaborated with BIA Interiors and the clients when selecting the finishes in the kitchen. Warm stained oak clads the walls and millwork, paired with cool blue countertops and tile backsplash. A new hutch at the edge of the kitchen operates as a breakfast nook and provides more prep space in the kitchen. The custom, furniture-quality cabinetry is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, adding a contemporary edge to the kitchen.

When selecting the new location for the kitchen, we wanted it to connect to the pool area and rear yard, fostering the indoor-outdoor connections that the family wanted. The new kitchen is also more centrally located within the house's footprint, encouraging it to be a central hub to be used in the clients' daily lives. Connecting the dining, kitchen, and entry foyer, we created a home base, including a bench with storage below and metal-framed glass cabinetry for glassware and table linens.

Off the warm oak kitchen, a butler’s pantry bathed in blue creates a visual connection with the blue countertops and provides a fun pop of color in the otherwise neutral, calm home. The bright cobalt blue is a motif that appears throughout the house, including in the couple's car!

As you walk through the spaces that are the heart of the home, you are greeted with views of the gorgeous rear yard and forest beyond. Large expanses of glass ensure that occupants are constantly connected to nature while inside the home.

Beyond its functional purpose, the atrium is an interesting visual element from both within and outside the house.
